Sociology is the systematic study of society and human behaviour. It examines how people

interact, how groups, institutions, and cultures shape our lives.

By investigating patterns of relationships, social norms, and institutions, Sociology helps us understand both the everyday

interactions between individuals and the broader societal trends.

This discipline draws on a range of research methods, from surveys and interviews to statistical analyses and ethnographic studies, to explore how factors such as class, race, gender and economic status influence social experiences.

Sociology offers tools to critically evaluate the world around us, encouraging us to question assumptions and consider how society might be improved for everyone. It’s a field that not only deepens our insight into understanding of human behaviour but also equips us with the critical thinking skills to address complex social issues.

You will study a wide range of topics, including crime and deviance, mass media, culture and identity, theories and methods, and education with research methods.

Course Information

At least five GCSEs at grades 9-4 in one sitting. An average GCSE score of 5 or more is preferred.

GCSE English and Maths at grade 4.

Through the contemporary study of sociology you will develop a wide range of transferable skills useful for university study

including critical thinking and research.

The essay-writing skills developed in sociology are highly valued by universities and are transferable to many degree courses.
