Are you interested in human biology, health or medical science?

Our Medical Science course offers a comprehensive study of the principles and applications of the field through three core units.

Medical Science enables students to study the principles and applications of medical science through three mandatory units,

while also exploring other areas in more detail through an optional unit. Students will develop practical and investigative skills that build on this fundamental knowledge.

The mandatory units cover the following areas: Human anatomy, physiology and pathology, Health issues and scientific reporting, Practical microbiology and infectious diseases

Alongside this theoretical knowledge, you will develop practical and investigative skills, including microbiological work with bacteria.

Designed to be studied alongside A Levels, this qualification complements subjects such as Sport, Health and Exercise, Sociology, Chemistry and Psychology. It serves as a strong foundation for those aiming to progress to higher education and enhance their career prospects in the health and medical fields.

Course Information

Four GCSEs at grades 9-4, or a Merit in a full Level 2 BTEC Diploma. Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths is preferred.

If you want to combine your AAQs with an A Level, you will need to meet the entry criteria for that A Level too. Plus, a grade 4+ in GCSE Science.

This qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level and is designed to be studied alongside other Level 3 qualifications. Students complete a combination of externally assessed examinations and internally assessed assignments, developing both scientific knowledge and practical laboratory skills relevant to healthcare, biomedical science and medical professions.

Medical Science combines scientific theory with substantial practical laboratory work. Students develop skills in microbiology, microscopy, biochemical testing, data analysis and scientific investigation alongside examination-based learning. Overall approximately 50% practical/coursework and 50% external assessment. 

You can progress to university to pursue degrees in nursing (including adult, children’s, mental health and learning disability

specialities), physiotherapy, paramedic science, midwifery, occupational therapy, radiotherapy and pharmaceutical sciences.

You will benefit from excellent facilities including high-specification laboratories with access to a wide range of the latest medical study materials.

You will have multiple opportunities to hear from guest speakers in the medical field, alongside relevant trips and visits to industry facilities.

This course will enable you to develop a purposeful and coherent combination of knowledge, skills and behaviours, allowing you to confidently enter or progress into employment in occupations that are recognised and valued by employers.
