Are you interested in finding out about the major events of the

past and how they have shaped the world today?

This course covers some of the most fascinating periods in world history and gives you the opportunity to undertake in-depth

research into one of the world’s most troubling regimes. You will study a range of interesting topics, including: The Challenge of German Nationalism (1789-1919), Britain 1930-1997, The Cold War in Europe (1941-1995).

Course Information

At least five GCSEs at grades 9-4 in one sitting. An average GCSE score of 5 or more is preferred.

GCSE English and Maths at grade 4. Plus, GCSE History preferred.

There are two AS exams at the end of the first year. Three written examinations at the end of the two-year course plus a Non-Exam Assessment (NEA). The assessments comprise:

British Period Study and Enquiry (25%)
Non-British Period Study (15%)
Thematic Study and Historical Interpretations (40%)
Topic-Based Essay (coursework) (20%)

The coursework is a 3,000 to 4,000 word independently researched essay on a topic chosen by the student.

This course is predominantly theory-based with a substantial independent research component. Assessment is approximately 80% written examinations and 20% coursework (NEA). There is no practical assessment.

History is highly regarded by universities. Degrees such as law, history, politics, English, media studies, archaeology, philosophy and sociology all value an A Level in History.

With History providing many transferable skills, it can also lead to a range of careers, with roles such as academic researcher, archivist, heritage manager, historic buildings inspector/conservation officer, museum education officer, museum/gallery curator, museum/gallery exhibitions officer and teacher.

History will help you develop many transferable skills, including analysis, essay writing, research, problem-solving, argumentation, communication and critical thinking. These skills will benefit you greatly as you progress to higher education and employment. The past teaches us about the present. Many of the topics you will cover are also relevant to modern political themes, such as nationalism, conservatism and immigration.
