Through our Forensic Science programme, you will study

BTEC Forensic Science to tailor your study towards your interests and progression. This is a triple subject, equivalent to three A Levels.

Forensic Science is simply the application of science to the law. You will cover a wide range of topics, immersing yourself in the world of forensic science and criminal investigations. From the ‘what happened’ of crime scene investigation to the ‘why do people commit crimes‘ explored through psychology, you will also examine court proceedings and how laws are applied in the UK.

Course Information

Four GCSEs at grades 9-4, or a Merit in a full Level 2 BTEC Diploma.

(If combining a BTEC with an A Level, the entry criteria for that A Level will need to be met too). Plus, a grade 4+ in GCSE English, Maths and Science.

This two-year full-time vocational qualification is equivalent in size to three A Levels. Assessment is through a mixture of externally assessed examinations and internally assessed coursework/assignments. Learners develop scientific, investigative and criminological knowledge through practical investigations, laboratory work and research-based projects.

Forensic and Criminal Investigation is a highly applied science qualification combining forensic practical work with scientific theory and criminology. Students undertake laboratory investigations, crime-scene activities, case studies and coursework projects alongside externally assessed units. Approximately 60% practical/coursework and 40% theory/external assessment.

After completing this programme, you can progress to university to study a degree in forensic science, criminal investigation, professional policing, psychology, criminology, or paramedic science. Further study at a higher level can lead to careers in areas such as criminal psychology, criminology, biomedical science, forensic science,

paramedic science and the police force. Other pathways include laboratory apprenticeships, policing apprenticeships and prison officer training.

You will benefit from excellent facilities, including high-specification laboratories with access to a wide range of the latest forensic study materials. We organise interactive and realistic crimes to investigate, where you will follow the case from the crime scene to the courtroom. This course will enable you to develop a purposeful and coherent combination of knowledge, skills and behaviours, allowing you to confidently enter or progress into employment in occupations recognised and valued by employers.
