Is there a topic that you are passionate about and would like to explore in more detail? Maybe you want to research why people commit a crime, investigate how we tackle the climate crisis we face today, undertake historical and cultural research into art or architecture for example.

Whatever your interests are, you can explore these further while gaining a qualification and UCAS points through completion of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The EPQ can be taken alongside any courses and involves completing a personal research project driven by your own independence and passion for a subject. You can either create something, such as an artwork, photo book, textbook, short story, teaching resource or music video, or write a report that answers your research question.

Course Information

At least five GCSEs at grades 9-4 in one sitting. An average GCSE score of 5 or more is preferred. GCSE English and Maths at grade 4.

The EPQ is a standalone Level 3 qualification worth one AS level. Students independently choose, research and complete a project on a topic not covered by their other qualifications. Assessment is 100% coursework and is based on the completed project, project log, production process and presentation. There are no written examinations.

The ratio depends on the project chosen. Research-report projects are largely academic, while artefact projects involve substantial practical work. Overall, the EPQ is best described as 100% coursework-based independent study, combining research, planning, evaluation and presentation skills. There are no examinations.

The emphasis of this course is to develop your independent research, study and presentation skills, culminating in the completion of a piece of independent research by you on a topic of your choice. These skills are highly valued by universities and employers as they show you can undertake independent research, which is necessary for all students at university and helps to bridge the gap between sixth form and degree-level study.

The EPQ will support your university application. Some universities may lower their typical offer if you achieve a particular grade in an EPQ. You will be taught by teachers and supervisors who have a background in research and have an excellent track record of providing a great learning experience, leading to a high percentage of A*-B grades. Visit local universities and gain experience of study skills that all universities look for in their applications.
