Do you have a passion for discovering how language works?

Are you intrigued by the social history, meaning and power of words and enjoy thinking analytically about the ways language is used in a variety of contexts? Do you have a passion for creative writing? Then this course is for you!

By studying English Language, you will develop your use of linguistic terminology and explore the ways in which language is used in different situations and social contexts.

You will study how language is intertwined with, influenced by and informed by a range of factors, including identity, gender and sexuality, power, technology, accent, dialect and age, to name a few.

You will study the differences between speech and writing, child language acquisition, language diversity and change, as well as having the opportunity to pursue your own linguistic interests by choosing your own areas to study and research for coursework.

Course Information

At least five GCSEs at grades 9-4 in one sitting. An average GCSE score of 5 or more is preferred.

GCSE English and Maths at grade 4. (A grade 5+ in GCSE English preferred.)

There are two written examinations at the end of the two-year course plus a Non-Exam Assessment (NEA). All assessments are completed as part of a linear qualification. Paper 1 (Language, the Individual and Society) is 40% of the A Level, Paper 2 (Language Diversity and Change) is 40%, and the NEA (Language in Action) is 20%.

This qualification is predominantly theory-based with independent coursework. Approximately 80% examination / 20% coursework (NEA). There is no practical assessment.

English Language is the perfect A Level to take if you want to pursue a degree in English Language or linguistics, either as a single subject or combined with English Literature, creative writing, linguistics or journalism.

Work alongside professionals in marketing, journalism and PR at the First Light Festival, where you will get to report on and represent the event. Meet academics and linguists from prestigious universities, including attending the A Level Language conference in London. Develop your own creative writing portfolio to help with your university, training or employment opportunities.
