Do you enjoy both Maths and the Social Sciences? Do you like problem-solving, intelligent thinking and analysing numbers? If so, A Level Economics is the subject for you!

Economics is an exciting and newsworthy subject that examines issues that make daily news headlines. The subject seeks to to explore how we divide our scarce resources to meet our unlimited wants and how those decisions affect us all.

You will develop an understanding of economic ideas and assumptions through a critical examination of present-day economic issues, problems and institutions that affect your daily life.

Course Information

At least five GCSEs at grades 9-4 in one sitting. An average GCSE score of 5 or more is preferred. GCSE English and Maths at grade 4. (A grade 5+ in GCSE Maths preferred.)

There are three externally examined papers taken at the end of the two-year course. Each paper is worth 33.3% of the A Level. There is no coursework or practical assessment. Students complete:

Paper 1: Markets, Consumers and Firms
Paper 2: The Wider Economic Environment
Paper 3: Economic Business Behaviour (synoptic paper drawing on all topics studied)

This course is entirely theory-based. Assessment is 100% written examinations with no coursework, practical work or non-exam assessment component.

Economics develops analytical thinking, alongside a strong understanding of current affairs and how society functions, preparing you for employment or an apprenticeship across a range of sectors.

These can include banking, insurance, finance and accounting, retail, manufacturing and operations, law and management trainee programmes.

You can also progress to university to study subjects such as economics, maths, business, accounting and finance, politics, law and more.

We offer trips to London to visit the Bank of England, the Financial District, the Houses of Parliament and Wembley Stadium. You will also visit leading UK universities. You will hear from a range of guest speakers, including financial and business experts, economists, entrepreneurs, business journalists, investment analysts, university lecturers and more. The course involves a variety of interesting modules, such as critical thinking, data analysis, problem solving, numeracy and cultural awareness.
